Wolves 3-1 West Brom

Guardian Football

Wolverhampton Wanderers' season has the shot in the arm it so badly needed after a restorative victory over their local rivals West Bromwich Albion lifted them out of the relegation zone with two games remaining. Their fate is back in their own hands after the outstanding Steven Fletcher scored twice either side of the goal he set up for Adlène Guedioura to put Wolves into a three-goal lead that proved too much for Albion to claw back.

There were still some nervous moments for Wolves to endure after Peter Odemwingie dispatched his penalty-kick in the 54th minute to become the first player this season to score in five successive Premier League matches. Yet the second Albion goal that would have deepened the anxiety among the home supporters never arrived, leaving Mick McCarthy and his players to celebrate a first win in six matches that puts them above Wigan and Blackpool.

The two goals that gave Wolves a comfortable and deserved half-time lead were almost identical. Both came from Stephen Hunt corner-kicks and exposed abject marking in the six-yard box. Fletcher smashed in the first, after Guedioura chested the ball down, and the roles were reversed in the 28th minute. This time Fletcher climbed above Simon Cox to head across goal for Guedioura to volley in from two yards with no Albion player near him.

When Fletcher beat Scott Carson, after capitalising on a dreadful mistake from Abdoulaye Méïté, the game looked to be over, yet from the moment that Guedioura brought down Jerome Thomas in the penalty area the complexion of the game changed. Odemwingie converted from the spot and Albion took control. Wayne Hennessey produced a great save to deny Simon Cox, Thomas hit the bar and Somen Tchoyi headed inches as Wolves held on.

HOW TO: Get More From Your iTunes Playlists

Mashable!

music image

While setting up an iTunes playlist may not be rocket science, there are quite a few cool features buried in Apple’s Smart Playlist software that you’re probably not taking advantage of.

Did you know you could add different equalizer effects to each of your tracks? Want to create favorite lists on the fly? Need to find some deep cuts in your own library? Take a look through these quick tips and share your own quick fixes in the comments below.

Creating a “Regular” Playlist

playlist image

In a nutshell: You can add a new playlist by clicking the plus sign on the bottom left of your iTunes window or select it from the File menu up-top. Name your playlist something awesome, find songs you like, drag-and-drop them onto the playlist and your set.

Quick note: You can re-order and delete songs from within a playlist without erasing them from your computer. However, any info you change (like song title, artist, or rating) will carry over into your music library.

Creating Smart Playlists

smart playlist

This is really the meat of iTunes’ playlist suite. Add a smart playlist by selecting it from the File menu. From there, you’ll get a pop-up screen asking you to set parameters for what songs will be included. There are a ton of options here, allowing you to select by date added, artist, genre, etc. You can add several parameters to narrow down the exact kind of songs you want by hitting the plus sign on the right of the parameter.

Quick note: Each category will give you different sorting options. For example, “Artist” will give you one drop down — “contains,” “is,” “is not,” “starts with,” etc. — and a text box whereas “Date Added” has another drop down — “is after,” “is in the last” — with either a date box or a month/day/year drop down. If you change your mind at any point, you can always right click a playlist to change it.

If you don’t want to bother with all the clutter and want iTunes to do the work for you, set up a Genius playlist. Simply click on a song you like, hit the Genius button on the bottom right of the iTunes window, and iTunes will pull together a playlist for you. Not so much control, but also not so much work if you just want to get up and go.

Create a Best-Of List On the Fly

best rated image

iTunes will automatically set you up with you a “Top 25 Most Played” List, but it doesn’t always do the trick. Use a custom smart playlist to help you compile a best-of playlist which you can add to without having to drag and drop. Create a new smart playlist and set the category to “Rating” — “is greater than” — and set the stars to as high as you like. Mine’s at three stars.

You’ll notice that any song on iTunes will have a column for rating. If it’s not there, right-click on the bar that has “Name,” “Album” etc. to add it. Now, whenever you like a song, just hit the five star rating and it will automatically show up in your smart playlist. You can edit how many songs you want in the list or leave it to include all your top rated songs. No more drag and drop required.

Deep Cuts

deep cuts image

If you have more than three hundred songs on your computer, there’s a good chance you probably don’t listen to all of them each week. Find some of those deep cuts by setting a playlist category as “Last Played” — “Is not in the last.” You can modify the actual time depending on how frequently you cycle through your songs. Mine, for example, is set to “6 months.” You can further narrow by adding category “Plays” — “Is less than” — “10″ to get at those songs you really have let slip.

Play Around With Sound

equalizer image

While audio purists might balk at making adjustments to the sound of a recording, iTunes does offer an equalizer option. If those laptop speakers just aren’t cutting it for music, you can increase the amount of bass, treble, etc. by moving a set of sliders. Sliders on the left manage low notes, and sliders on the right manage high notes. This can help get a better sound out of your playlists, but it can be a little confusing. No worries, there are also bunch of presets like “Jazz,” “Hip-Hop,” “Bass Booster,” or “Small Speakers.”

You can access a general iTunes equalizer through the Window folder at the top of the screen. However, you can also modify the equalizer settings for individual songs (you don’t want a “Bass Reducer” on your Daft Punk songs, do you?). Right click on the bar that has “Album,” “Artist,” “Rating,” etc. and add “Equalizer.” This will bring up a small button next to every song. You can then set individual presets for songs to match their style or your preference. You can actually tweak those presets from the main equalizer under “Window.”

Your Turn

Hopefully some of these tips have been helpful. Still, we know there are even more tricks out there that we haven’t thought of. What’s your set-up like? What are your tips? Let us know in the comments.

Why you shouldn't reveal your Royal Wedding Guest name

Graham Cluley's blog

In the absence of a genuine ticket to the real event, Facebook users are encouraging each other to reveal their Royal Wedding Guest name.

Here's a typical message that is currently being spread by well-meaning users across the social network:

Wedding guest name on Facebook

In honor of the big wedding on Friday, use your royal wedding guest name. Start with either Lord or Lady. Your first name is one of your grandparents' names. Your surname is the name of your first pet, double-barreled with the name of the street you grew up on. Let's do this! Post yours here. Then cut and paste it into your status.

Regally yours,
Lady Edith Spanky-Rushmoor

Do you see the problem?

By playing the game, you might be unwittingly making life easier for identity thieves and hackers.

Look at it this way. Think of all the websites which ask you to give it a "secret question" which can confirm your identity in the event of you forgetting your password.

Yahoo password question

If you tell everyone your Royal Wedding Guest name then you are giving away information which might help someone break into, say, your email account.

So, here's my advice.

Firstly, don't post this kind of personal information onto the internet - the few seconds worth of amusement you may get by telling people your Royal Wedding Guest name are not worth the potential pain of having your identity stolen.

Secondly, when websites ask you for a "secret answer" to reset your password... lie. You don't need to tell the truth when you're asked by a website what your mother's maiden name was, or the name of your favourite TV show. So, say something random but memorable that no-one is likely to guess like "Xena Warrior Princess" or "Artichoke Sandwich".

If you use Facebook and want to learn more about threats, you should join the Sophos Facebook page where we have a thriving community of over 70,000 people.

Of course, if you do happen to be one particular couple getting married tomorrow, you're not going to have any chance keeping your grandparents' names secret..

Hat-tip: Thanks to Naked Security reader Paul who brought this particular issue to our attention.

Gibson bullied off Twitter in two hours

Guardian Football

• Manchester United midfielder set up account at midday
• Gibson bombarded with negative comments about his ability

As footballers rush to join the social networking revolution that is Twitter, they may want to pause and reconsider following Darron Gibson's sobering experience.

The Manchester United midfielder – perhaps inspired by his team-mate Wayne Rooney's ability to attract nearly 200,000 followers within two days of joining the site – opened his own account at midday. The launch was greeted with much fanfare by Gibson's captain at United, Rio Ferdinand, who tweeted: "We have a new member from the Man utd crew... @dgibbo28 has joined twitterverse show him some love tweeps!"

But two hours later the account had been shut down – seemingly because of the 23-year-old's unwillingness to put up with the abuse he was receiving from purported United fans.

Some of the messages aimed in the direction of the Republic of Ireland international included the following:

@dgibbo28 your performance on saturday was one of the worst I've ever seen of any utd player. scared of the ball much?'
@dgibbo28 hasn't tweeted yet. Seems somewhat fitting after the countless anonymous performances we've seen from the 'footballer'
@dgibbo28 my mate thought you were about 33 years old in the heart of midfield! Movement like pirlo!!
@dgibbo28 team do all hard work keeping possession then u hit row Z every fuckin time!!
@dgibbo28 the biggest compliment i can give you is that you are better than Carrick

Shortly after Gibson decided to remove himself from the firing line, several other United supporters started a campaign to coax him back on to Twitter, attempting to get a #getbackgibbo hashtag to trend.

Gibson is among Manchester United's squad for their Champions League semi-final first leg against Schalke on Tuesday night. No doubt he will be hoping for a slightly more favourable reception from the travelling United fans in Gelsenkirchen.

Preview app in Lion will act as Word, Excel, PowerPoint viewer

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

Mac OS X's Preview app has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a PDF viewer. AppleInsider reports that in the latest build of Lion, Preview has received a UI overhaul and added some pretty cool new features. For example, Preview will act as a Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint viewer. This is one of the smartest things Apple could have done. How many times have you sent a PowerPoint file to someone only to get an email back saying they didn't know how to open it (happens all the time with my friend's grandparents)?

Now when anyone running Mac OS X 10.7 Lion receives an Excel or PowerPoint file, the file will automatically open in Preview if they don't have Office or iWork installed. Of course, they won't be able to edit the Microsoft docs in Preview, but they will be able to view them just like they can view PDFs. Word docs can open in Preview as a viewable file too, but by default they will still open in TextEdit as an editable document.

Other additions to Preview include Full Screen mode; monochromatic, square toolbar buttons; a magnifier loupe tool (like the kind you find in Aperture); expanded PDF annotation tools (including filled text and speech and thought bubbles); and the ability to scan your signature in the Preview app so you can use it to digitally sign documents. I don't know about you, but I always look forward to OS X upgrades not so much for the big features, but for the continued refinements to the OS and its apps as a whole. Judging by the way Lion is shaping up, it won't disappoint.

The official release date for Portal 2 is April 19, but if you have preordered the game you can begin to preload the title right now. The point of all this is to get us talking about Portal 2, but it's beginning to seem like the game will be released early. If you're a big fan of Portal, you may want to call in sick this Friday.

Squad sheets: Newcastle United v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Guardian Football

As an ex-Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy expects a hot reception on Tyneside. Undeterred, he trusts that, despite lacking the injured Kevin Doyle – a striker integral to Wolves's strategy – his side can drag Newcastle into relegation waters. Aware Alan Pardew's team have won one of their past 10 games, McCarthy said: "Newcastle have 36 points but, if we beat them they're in it, no question." In contrast, a win would place the hosts, for whom Stephen Ireland should make his debut, within touching distance of safety. "It would put seven points between us," said McCarthy. "That would make catching Newcastle hard." Louise Taylor

Spooks: Is This The End For Harry?

Life of Wylie

FILMING began last month on series 10 of Spooks, due on screen this autumn.

It’s now been confirmed that Sophia Myles has left the BBC1 drama after just one series as Beth Bailey.

While an old secret comes back to haunt Harry Pearce, played by Peter Firth.

Will this be the last series of Spooks?

I asked BBC Drama boss Ben Stephenson that very question a few weeks ago.

But his lips were sealed.

The new 2011 series will consist of six episodes, compared to eight last year.

Here’s the Kudos production release:

The headlines:

A Decade Of Spooks

And The Spies Face Their Biggest Challenge Yet.

After 10 Years Has Top Spy Harry Pearce Finally Made One Enemy Too Many?

Laura Pulver, Jonathan Hyde, Geoffrey Streatfeild and Alice Krige also join the hit spy drama.

London, 1 April 2011: Celebrating its landmark tenth series, Kudos Film and Television’s critically-acclaimed hit spy drama, Spooks, is back in production and will return to BBC One later this year.

Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) has spent 10 years walking the corridors of Thames House and dodging threats, but as Spooks celebrates a decade on our screens, the future of the MI5 chief is in jeopardy.  A huge secret, hidden deep in his past emerges, threatening to destroy him and those close to him. Will Ruth Evershed (Nicola Walker), the woman he loves, stand by him, or is this the end for Harry? And, more importantly, can Section D survive without its leader?

As tensions rise in the Middle East and the UK’s special relationship with America falters, Britain is forced to befriend the new heavyweights on the global scene, none more so than Russia, forcing Harry to revisit old relationships made during the Cold War. Is it time for him to confront his demons and head back into the cold? Will he be able to return?  Nothing can be taken for granted in this shocking and gripping drama that has consistently remained at the top of its game for a decade; a feat rarely achieved by a British drama series.

Simon Crawford Collins, Executive Producer Kudos Film and Television, said: “The heart of the show for the last 10 years has been Harry Pearce and his increasingly thwarted relationship with the wonderful Ruth. In Harry and Ruth, Peter and Nicola have created two of the most subtle and engaging characters in TV drama today and this series will take them both on a very unexpected journey. We hope it will be unmissable television.”

In keeping with the secrecy you would expect around Spooks, producers are keeping tight-lipped about storylines, but they have revealed a host of new characters joining the spy drama.  While the team has been left reeling from Lucas North’s betrayal, and with Beth Bailey decommissioned, Section D has a new leader. Erin Watts, played by Lara Pulver (True Blood, Robin Hood) is ambitious, hungry and determined to make her mark.

A new IT supremo, Calum Reed, played by Geoffrey Streatfeild (Ashes to Ashes, Above Suspicion: Deadly Intent), also joins Dimitri (Max Brown), Tariq (Shazad Latif) and Ruth on The Grid and the maverick proves more than a match for Tariq when it comes to computer wizardry.

The new series of the high-octane drama also welcomes Alice Krige (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Deadwood) and acting stalwart Jonathan Hyde (Titanic, Jumanji , The Mummy) to the cast.  In addition, Simon Russell Beale (Much Ado About Nothing, An Ideal Husband) reprises his role as the Home Secretary.

Christopher Aird, BBC, said: “Spooks is consistently one of the most intelligent, entertaining and action packed shows on television. It is testament to the huge talent of the creative team over the years that the 10th series is in production. We are very excited; the 10th series of Spooks will deliver everything its devoted fans expect and much they do not!”

Spooks is a Kudos Film and Television production for BBC One filming in London until mid June 2011.  It was commissioned by Danny Cohen, Controller, BBC One and Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning.  Spooks is produced by Chris Fry and executive produced by Simon Crawford Collins, Jane Featherstone and Howard Burch for Kudos Film and Television.  Acting for the BBC are Sarah Brandist and Christopher Aird.

Rumor: BlackBerry Messenger to land in the App Store on April 26

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

Rumblings of an iPhone version of BlackBerry messenger surfaced earlier this month from an unidentified source that provided a tip to BGR. Another unconfirmed source has stepped forward with additional information on the MacRumors forums that points to an April 26 debut of the BlackBerry Messenger app in the App Store.

This latest information purportedly comes from an attendee of a social media conference hosted by RIM in Toronto. During the presentation, RIM's Co-CE Jim Balsillie supposedly told those in attendance that BBM would make its way to the iOS App Store on April 26. The source also claims the app would be updated this summer with a new notification system. This last piece may be an indirect reference to iOS 5 which may overhaul Apple's current notification system.

Douse this rumor with some pickling salt, kosher salt and table salt as we cannot verify this April 26 date, nor the existence of an BBM app. Based on earlier leaked information and RIM's move to incorporate Android application emulation in its PlayBook tablet, a move to iOS in the upcoming month is not that far-fetched. Anyone a believer?

The image above was provided to TUAW several weeks ago and should not be considered evidence one way or the other of a BBM app.

Thanks to Matt for the tip.
